Klee was born in Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland, but spent most of his life in Germany. He studied art in Munich and Paris, and was influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Braque. In 1911, Klee joined the Der Blaue Reiter group of expressionist artists, which included Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc.
