Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez was a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence. She was born in Queretaro, Mexico, on September 8, 1768. Her father was a wealthy landowner and her mother was a devout Catholic. Josefa was educated at home by private tutors and became a well-read and intelligent young woman.

In 1791, Josefa married Miguel Dominguez, the corregidor (mayor) of Queretaro. Miguel was a supporter of Mexican independence, and Josefa shared his views. In 1810, Miguel was arrested by the Spanish authorities for his involvement in a plot to overthrow the Spanish government. Josefa was also arrested, but she was later released.

After her release, Josefa continued to work for Mexican independence. She organized a network of spies and supporters, and she helped to smuggle weapons and supplies to the rebel forces. In 1813, Josefa was arrested again, and this time she was imprisoned in Mexico City. She was tortured and interrogated, but she refused to betray her fellow conspirators.

In 1821, Mexico finally gained its independence from Spain. Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez was hailed as a heroine, and she was given the title of "La Corregidora" (the Mayoress). She continued to be active in Mexican politics until her death in 1829.
