Mary Matsuda Gruenewald was born in Gardena, California, on January 5, 1925. Her parents were Japanese immigrants, and she had two older brothers. When she was three years old, her family was forced to move to a Japanese internment camp in Poston, Arizona, after the United States entered World War II.

Gruenewald's family lived in the camp for three years. During that time, she experienced racism and discrimination firsthand. She was not allowed to attend school, and she was often made fun of because of her Japanese heritage. However, she also learned the importance of family and community. She made lifelong friends in the camp, and she learned to appreciate the simple things in life.

After the war ended, Gruenewald's family was released from the camp. They moved back to California, where she finished high school. She then went on to college, where she studied social work. After graduating from college, she worked as a social worker for many years. She also became an active advocate for civil rights.

In 1971, Gruenewald published her memoir, "Never Grow Up." The book tells the story of her experiences as a child in a Japanese internment camp. It is a powerful and moving account of the resilience and strength of the human spirit.

Gruenewald's memoir has been widely read and acclaimed. It has been translated into several languages, and it has been made into a documentary film. Gruenewald has also received numerous awards for her work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Mary Matsuda Gruenewald is an inspiration to us all. Her story reminds us of the importance of standing up for what we believe in, even when it is difficult. She also shows us that it is possible to overcome adversity and achieve great things.
