Catherine of Aragon: The First Wife

Catherine Of Aragon Henry VIII In 100 Objects: The Tyrant King Who Had Six Wives

Catherine of Aragon was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. She was born in 1485 and married Henry VIII in 1509. Catherine was a devout Catholic and a strong supporter of her husband's policies. However, her inability to produce a male heir ultimately led to her downfall.

In 1527, Henry VIII began to pursue an annulment of his marriage to Catherine. He claimed that their marriage was invalid because Catherine had previously been married to his older brother, Arthur. The Pope refused to grant an annulment, which led Henry to break with the Catholic Church and establish the Church of England.

Catherine was stripped of her title as queen and banished from court. She died in exile in 1533, at the age of 47.
