The Buergenthals were a happy and close-knit family. They lived in a comfortable home and enjoyed a good life. However, their world was turned upside down in 1939 when the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia.

The Nazi Invasion

After the Nazi invasion, the Buergenthals were forced to live in a ghetto. They were subjected to discrimination and violence. In 1942, Thomas and his father were sent to Auschwitz.

Auschwitz was the largest and most notorious of the Nazi concentration camps. More than one million people were murdered at Auschwitz. Thomas and his father were among the lucky ones who survived.

Liberation

In 1945, Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet army. Thomas and his father were among the few survivors. They were both physically and emotionally scarred by their experience.

After the war, Thomas and his father immigrated to the United States. Thomas went on to become a successful lawyer and human rights advocate. He has written several books about his experience in the Holocaust, including The Boy Who Followed His Father Into Auschwitz.
