First Expedition (1828-29)

The first expedition, which lasted from November 1828 to May 1829, was led by Charles Sturt and consisted of a party of 12 men. The expedition set out from Sydney and travelled west across the Blue Mountains to the Darling River. From there, they followed the Darling River northwards to the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers.

The expedition then turned east and followed the Murray River upstream. They reached the site of the present-day city of Adelaide in January 1829. From there, they continued eastwards to the mouth of the Murray River.

The first expedition was a great success. Sturt and his party covered a vast amount of territory and made important discoveries about the geography of southern Australia. They also made contact with several Aboriginal tribes and recorded their observations on their language, customs, and beliefs.

Second Expedition (1844-46)

The second expedition, which lasted from September 1844 to January 1846, was also led by Charles Sturt. This time, Sturt was accompanied by a party of 15 men. The expedition set out from Adelaide and travelled northwards into the interior of Australia.

The expedition reached the Flinders Ranges in October 1844. From there, they continued northwards to the Cooper Creek. They then turned east and followed the Cooper Creek downstream.

The second expedition was not as successful as the first. Sturt and his party were forced to turn back due to lack of water. However, they did make some important discoveries, including the discovery of the Diamantina River.
