Hans Holbein the Younger was a German painter and printmaker who is considered one of the greatest artists of the Northern Renaissance. Born in Augsburg in 1497, Holbein traveled to Basel, Switzerland, in 1515, where he established himself as a leading painter of portraits and religious works. In 1526, he moved to London, England, where he became the court painter to King Henry VIII. Holbein died in London in 1543 at the age of 45.

Holbein was a master of portraiture, and his paintings are known for their realism, attention to detail, and psychological insight. He also created religious works, allegorical paintings, and illustrations for books. Holbein's work is characterized by its clarity of line, precision of drawing, and subtle use of color.
